Webb Simpson got up early Saturday, put on a few layers of clothes, and got to work.

By the time he finished his third round of the PGA Championship on a brisk and blustery day, he had moved up more than 45 spots on the leaderboard.

Simpson shot a 5-under 65 on Saturday at Southern Hills, far and away the best round of the morning.

“It’s probably top, probably two or three, best rounds I’ve had in a major, you know, considering the conditions,” said Simpson.

He started the day making birdies on Nos. 3 and 4 but gave those shots back with bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8.

After making the turn he started to make his climb up the leaderboard.

Simpson rolled in a 29-footer for birdie on the par-4 12th before dunking a wedge from 71 yards for eagle on the par-5 13th. He added another birdie on the next hole, draining a 20-footer, and one more on the short par-4 17th for good measure.

“I think to get a low round in a major championship, you need a run like that,” said Simpson. “But I didn’t expect it on a day like today to get a nice few under in... a short amount of time but I’ll take it.”

At the time Simpson completed his round, only three other golfers had also come in with under-par scores.

Simpson made the cut on the number, sitting 4 over through 36 holes. He was part of the tougher Late/Early wave of tee times through the first two rounds.
